Grammar Tip 1: Split Phrasal Verbs

Splitting Phrasal Verbs

Most phrasal verbs, when used with a direct object, can be split in two ways and both ways are OK:

LOOK UP >
Can you look up John's phone number?
Can you look John's phone number up?
TURN ON >
I always turn on the heating in September.
I always turn the heating on in September.

But.....if you use a pronoun as the direct object, you have to
split the phrasal verb:

Can you look it up? (Not Can you look up it?)
I always turn it on. (Not I always turn on it.)
